2020 CQ VHF Plans

My new power scheme will get a workout during the 2020 CQ VHF Contest. I will participate as a 6-hour hilltopper from Ball Knob Cemetery near Alvord, TX in EM13EI. This is not a 'rare' grid but the location is out of the way and has good elevation. It will give me a chance to test my new auxiliary battery and generator power systems. Operating will be from 1PM to 7PM CST.

I hope the close proximity to the DFW metroplex will result in some good QSO totals. See you on the air!

     Although there isn't much activity on the UHF bands in this part of rural North Texas, I decided to go out to see what I could stir up. Although I thought I might cover four grids, I adjusted due to conditions and only went to two.      As I pulled into my first spot on I-44 Exit 1 in Oklahoma, I saw a sign of good luck. Opening the door and looking straight ahead, I found this nice gift on the ground!      The antenna and mast went up in about 15 minutes. I really seem to have an efficient system now for 'stop-and-shoot' operations. Antennas up top are Directive Systems 'rover special' beams for 1.25m and 70cm. Although excellent antennas, I worked a majority of my contacts on my vehicle mounted Larsen NMO2/70 vertical antenna using FM. 10-GHz Transceiver and CW Interface Idea

     I posted a few weeks ago about my plans to use some inexpensive Doppler motion sensors as 10-GHz transmitters. At the time, I wasn't entirely sure on how I would transmit with it. To do so with this module, you modulate the input voltage and can use an audio input device such as a computer, MP3 player or something similar.      Surfing around a Facebook group a few nights ago led me to find the Four State QRP Group. On their site, I saw a Super Simple Code Practice Oscillator. It has audio output to a small speaker and a rudimentary key built onto the circuit board. Eureka---this gave me an idea.      The SSCPO will lose its speaker and I'll replace it with a 3.5mm audio jack for output and forgo the key switch and install a connector for an external straight key or keyer. 2020 CQWW-VHF Contest Hilltopper Operation

     This year's contest took place near Alvord, TX in grid EM13. A good friend and ham buddy of mine, Dale Cheek (NY5B) mentioned a place that might be good for contesting. I had about a week before the contest started but couldn't go scout out the location ahead of time. So, a 'map recon' was done using topographic maps and the location looked promising.      Since I was coming into an unseen location, I decided to arrive two hours early and see what I could find. Upon arrival at 11 AM,  I found the initial spot to be high in elevation but enclosed by 40-foot trees in all directions. It wasn't looking too good at this point, so I decided to keep travelling east up the road from the site. Another quarter mile away revealed an even higher elevation that was around 1150 feet and had amazingly clear line-of-sight in all directions!      It took about an hour to set up the mast, antennas and generator.
