I started a new personal amateur radio challenge in late 2019 to explore VHF and up weak signal operating. This blog will share some of the things I have been doing.

My primary focus is on preparing for VHF rover operations during the ARRL VHF and CQWW VHF contests. At this time, I have four bands available on 6 meters, 2 meters, 1.25 meters, and 70cm. Antennas for each band are mostly homebrewed and I will share some information on those here as well.

     Although there isn't much activity on the UHF bands in this part of rural North Texas, I decided to go out to see what I could stir up. Although I thought I might cover four grids, I adjusted due to conditions and only went to two.      As I pulled into my first spot on I-44 Exit 1 in Oklahoma, I saw a sign of good luck. Opening the door and looking straight ahead, I found this nice gift on the ground!      The antenna and mast went up in about 15 minutes. I really seem to have an efficient system now for 'stop-and-shoot' operations. Antennas up top are Directive Systems 'rover special' beams for 1.25m and 70cm. Although excellent antennas, I worked a majority of my contacts on my vehicle mounted Larsen NMO2/70 vertical antenna using FM. Give Me More Power, Scotty!

Well, today I did some 'horse trading' and swapped an HF amp, which is useless to me in my current QTH, and obtained a VHF amplifier. I was looking for at least 100-watts and a mobile platform and found an RF Concepts RFC-2-117. This amp takes 10-watts input and puts out up to 170-watts. Here's the amp: I also tested the 7-element 2-meter beam last night to check into the North Texas Sidewinders on Two (SWOT) net. When Bob, W5FKN in Decatur, TX opened the net by reading the preamble, I was able to copy him while he was turned due south of me. This is the first time I've ever been able to hear him until he starts turning towards Tulsa! Also, the beam picked up check-ins from Houston and Shreveport which I could not normally hear. I kept switching back-and-forth using my new 2-position Diawa switch going between the Big Wheel and the beam. 10-GHz Transceiver and CW Interface Idea

     I posted a few weeks ago about my plans to use some inexpensive Doppler motion sensors as 10-GHz transmitters. At the time, I wasn't entirely sure on how I would transmit with it. To do so with this module, you modulate the input voltage and can use an audio input device such as a computer, MP3 player or something similar.      Surfing around a Facebook group a few nights ago led me to find the Four State QRP Group. On their site, I saw a Super Simple Code Practice Oscillator. It has audio output to a small speaker and a rudimentary key built onto the circuit board. Eureka---this gave me an idea.      The SSCPO will lose its speaker and I'll replace it with a 3.5mm audio jack for output and forgo the key switch and install a connector for an external straight key or keyer.
